Painting with Salt: Adding New Textures to Your Watercolor Painting

by Lauren Fallat, LPC LPAT ATR-BC

Salt paintings, also known as "salt art", are specific types of art paintings that are created by sprinkling salt onto wet paint. In this process, the salt will dissolve into the wetness of the paint and paper and create unique patterns and textures. The salt crystals cause interesting patterns to form on the painting's surface as they dissolve.

There are a few different ways to add salt to your watercolors. You can either add it directly to the paint, or you can add it to the water before you mix in the paint. If you add it directly to the paint, you'll need to stir it in well so that the salt is completely dissolved. The salt crystals not only add visual interest, but they can also help to lighten the color of the paint.

The most basic way to add salt to watercolor paint is to sprinkle it directly onto the wet paint. When salt is added to watercolor paint, it causes the paint to swell. This swelling action pushes the pigment particles out of the water and into the air, resulting in interesting and unique effects. This will create a granular texture with small, sharp crystals. The salt will dissolve as the paint dries, leaving behind a fine white film on the surface of the painting.

One of the great things about watercolor paint is the way it interacts with other elements. Adding salt to watercolor paint can produce some very interesting results. Depending on the type of salt you use, the size of the grains, and how much you add, you can create anything from subtle highlights to dramatic textures. The size of the salt crystals also affects the way the paint behaves. Larger crystals will cause more dramatic effects, while smaller crystals will produce subtler results.

Salt paintings are beautiful, textured pieces of art that can be used to express emotions, communicate ideas, and tell stories. They can also be used to create beautiful pieces of art. It is a simple and fun way to create a unique piece of art. The best part is that you can create a salt painting with just a few supplies that you probably have at home.

To create a salt painting, you'll need:

- Salt

- Water

- Watercolor Paint

- A surface on which to paint- watercolor or mixed media paper works great!

- Paintbrushes (various sizes)

Salt paintings are a great way to get creative and relieve stress, and they're surprisingly easy to make. Allow yourself to get connected to the process of applying the watercolor paint freely. Remember that this type of technique is best experienced when we allow ourselves to literally go with the flow of the paint. Allow yourself to let the process guide you rather than you controlling what happens. The focus is less on what the painting looks like and more about how the colors of the paint interact with the salt. This is a great technique for practicing mindfulness and focusing in on the present moment.
